LEGISLATION
ON RESCUE
The Brazilian Navy recognizes five classes of lifejackets, as
per its use based on "Rules of the Maritime Authority for
approval of
materials" - "NORMAM 05/2000".

CLASS OF EMPLOYMENT OF MATERIAL FOR APPROVAL
CLASS I - manufactured as per requirements of the International Convention
for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
Used in ships navigating between Brazilian and foreign ports.
CLASS II - manufactured on the basis of the SOLAS requirements, lessened
for use on vessels engaged in navigation at open sea,
Used in ships navigating between Brazilian and foreign ports.
CLASS III-manufactured on basis of the SOLAS requirements, lessened
for use on vessels engaged in inland waterways.
Class IV - material manufactured to be used for long periods by people
involved in tasks carried out near the edge of
vessels or suspended on boards or other devices that run risk of falling
into the water accidentally.
